Finishing Burda Jacket and Other Plans
You guys thought I forgot about the Burda jacket, didn’t you? The jacket was set aside for a little bit, because I was getting frustrated. The books I ordered to help me with the notched collar took forever to get to me, so I just winged it.
Here’s a sneak peak:
The jacket is all but complete except for the cuffs. The cuffs…
The free arm on my sewing machine is too wide for the cuffs fit around it. My mom offered to let me use her old Kenmore because the free arm on her machine is a little narrower. To no avail. The cuffs still didn’t fit. So that leaves me with no choice: I must hand stitch the cuffs to finish this jacket. 🙁 Unless someone can give me another suggestion.
EDIT 3/20/09: Thank you Jackie, Beth, and Sigrid for your helpful suggestions! I had to just stop and think about it, and I finally visualized how to sew the cuffs. The jacket is complete, and hopefully a review will be up by Sunday!
On a brighter note, it’s time to update my work wardrobe, and these are the patterns I’ve chosen.
McCall’s 5522
Butterick 5250
Since the McCall’s blouse is a TNT (tried ‘n’ true) pattern for me, it’ll get another go, with the ruffle (not shown on the line drawing). Hopefully, it’s not too late to jump on the high-waisted pants trend. I think the two will look cute together as a stylish work outfit. Fabric pics will be posted later.
Be blessed!
Can’t wait to see the finished Jacket!!
All right, all right! I’ll try it! LOL!
Looking good. And I did the cuffs on mine in the way described above. No handstitching.
This is looking good. When you figure out your stitching and complete this ensemble, I know it will look fantastic!
I was going to suggest a simlar method as Beth. If I’m envisioning correctly what you want to do, the cuffs are complete and just need topstitching? Turn the garment/sleeves inside out with the wrong sides to you. Then sew the cuffs on the outside as you want. The cuffs and the rest of the garment will be to the left of your needle and you will be sewing like inside the cuff but it’s where you want the neatness of your topstitching to show. I hope this helps (and makes sense:) ) I hardly use my freearm because it wasn’t available on the older machines. The jacket looks great so far and I can’t wait to see you in it!
Beth, I’ve already tried that. It didn’t work. I need to top stitch the cuffs on the outside, and pushing the fabric aside to achieve this is almost not doable.
We sewed for years without free arms- just sew on the inside of the cuff and push the area above to the side and sew. Give it a try it will work. Go slow and steady. If you’re scaried practice with out thread. Good Luck.
Can’t wait to see it!!!
