Review | New Look 6774 Dress

Pattern: New Look 6774 Dress

Pattern Description: Misses “Design Your Look” dresses, with mix and match pattern pieces. I made D+J+K.

Pattern Sizing: 10-22. I made a 12.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing? Yes! The pictures are kind of dark, but you get the idea.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, the instructions were well written and easy to follow. I really didn’t have any problems with them.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the length of the skirt and the many bodice options. I mean this pattern has NINE different bodices! There are so many combinations you can chose for this dress.

Fabric Used: A bold floral Beverlyann Stillwell cotton print that I purchased from Fabric.com.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did not interface the bodice front and back lining; I think it would have made those portions of the dress too stiff. I did, however, add the interfacing to the midriff per the instructions. I added bra cups to the bodice to eliminate the need to wear a strapless bra. I referenced a tutorial from the Sewing Divas, and it worked out rather well. To finish off the bodice, I slip-stitched the front opening closed. Pictures of my process for inserting the bra cups are at the bottom of the post. I also adjusted the fit by folding back 1-1/4″ on both sides for the lapped zipper (instead of 5/8″ and 1/2″).

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I do plan on sewing this at least once more in the sorter version with the straight neckline and pockets (C+J+L). I definitely recommend the pattern to others, because it was relatively easy to construct and really cute.

Conclusion: This is a really great dress, and it looks wonderful in funky, bold prints. It can be dressed up or made more casual, all depending on the fabric you choose.

I centered the bra cup and zig-zagged it to the lining. Do this before sewing the lining to the fashion fabric.
