Review | Butterick 5030 Wrap Dress

Pattern: Butterick 5030 (Six Sew Easy)
Style: Wrap Dress
Rating: 5/5

Pattern Description: Flared, wrapped dress, below mid-knee has semi-fitted bodice, front band or collar, sleeve variations. A: contrast bands and belt. B, F: purchased belt. C, D: self fabric belts. E: cuffs and single layered sash.

Fabric: Black, red, and white floral patterned stretch poplin (96% cotton, 4% lycra) from Fabric.com. The fabric is very crisp without much drape. If I make the dress again, I will chose a softer fabric with more drape.

Notions: thread and three hooks and eyes.

Overall: I have to say that I really like this pattern. I made View D in a size 12 with no alterations. The construction was very easy and the pattern instructions were well-ordered and logical. I think the semi-fitted bodice and A-line skirt would be flattering on several body types. Ironically, this pattern was much simpler than similarly styled Simplicity 3877 Threads Wrap Dress, yet the Butterick fits better. Another thing I like about this Butterick dress is that it opens like a coat. You can just throw it on and secure it with the hooks and eyes. The belt is optional and can be used for added security (to avoid any unforseen wardrobe malfunctions, LOL!).

Yeah, I used navy blue serger thread because I was too lazy to go out and buy black. Sue me! LOL!

  1. Elizabeth and Girlonarock, thanks for stopping by.

@Girlonarock, you can use woven fabrics for this dress. I used stretch poplin for my first dress, and a peachskin polyester for the second version.

    I hope this helps!

  2. Hi, coolobreeze. Thanks for stopping by! Yes, M5030 is a great pattern, and it doesn’t long at all to sew up. I think you’ll be pleased with the results. I’m actually working on the Sew Stylish 3867 top with some left over fabric. Hopefully, I finish it some time this weekend.
